New Year/New Thanks

So another New Year/New Start has flown by without a hitch (running times? we laugh in the face of running times!). A stressful few months of preparation over the festive period culminating in a mere 10 hours of music.... But what a fantastic 10 hours of audible awesomeness they were!
Thank you so much to everyone who came down (I know there were a few of you as once again The Well ran out of beer all too quickly!) and obviously special thanks to all the bands that played.
To The Dauntless Elite for bringing the evening to a magnificent close; Above Them for "the rock" and also for bringing down their back-line for the day; Caves for making the trip all the way up to Leeds 2 years in a row; Bedford Falls for simply being bloody ace; The Amistad and Homebrew for doing us proud and playing as well as I've ever seen them; Saturday's Kids for taking the tea-time death-slot and still playing their heats out regardless; Coal Train for coming down and playing early despite having evening plans; Matadors and The Dead Reckoning for adding a touch of rock and roll to proceedings, with the latter filling in at short notice; Slow Science for basically being SOOOOO BLOODY GOOD IT HURTS; Matthew "Brown Hound James" Broadbent for playing the Dugong and Nathaniel Green hits and The Facts for kicking the whole day off in style.
Phew... And to Zapiain and Peachfuzz who sadly couldn't make it: thanks for just being you.
Finally thanks to Kev and Tom at The Well for doing what they do and to Jonathan Greenwood for his photo of Caves that you can see above. Good lads all of 'em.
Will there be a NYNS 2013? Hmm... At this point in time who knows... But we won't let our 15th Anniversary pass us by without doing something. Watch this space I guess...

New Year/New Start returns to The Well in Leeds this January.
After the success of last year's all-dayer we decided to give it another whirl so... On the 28th January at 1pm The Facts will kick off what will be almost 10 hours of quality tuneage in Leeds.
Our own The Dauntless Elite, who are celebrating the release of their fantastic second album, will headline, ably supported by the cream of the crop of the current UK DIY punk scene. From the indie-rock of Bedford Falls and Peachfuzz to the Sonic Youth-inspired noise of Saturday's Kids; from the street-punk anthems of Homebrew to the rock and roll swagger of Matadors, from the DC styled pop of Coal Train to the alt-country twang of The Brown Hound James Band - the full breadth of the UK scene is covered.
Add to the above the brilliant Caves, Above Them, Slow Science, Zapiain and The Amistad. It's sure to be one hell of a day!
For more information - visit the NYNS website or get social on Facebook.
Also worth mentioning is the New Year/Pre-Start gig that's happening on the 27th January at The Fox And Newt. Then you'll be able to enjoy the sounds of Protectors, Digger Barnes, Achtung Everybody!, Jimmy Islip (of That Fucking Tank/The Magnificent/Eighty Six),and Get Human so why not make a Leeds weekend of it.

A huge, sloppy-wet "thanks!" to everyone who came down to The Well last week for New Year/New Start 2011!
We had an amazing time (stress? what stress?) and the turn-out seriously couldn't have been better - including band-members we reckon there were about 325 people milling about! At a DIY punk gig... in Leeds... in 2011. Get in. So many old friends and faces too added to the feeling that we'd all transported back in time 6 years!
All the bands were brilliant and definitely went away with some new fans - cheers to you all for playing! Alas I never get to see everyone because of time spent on the door but personal highlights for me included the one-off Eighty Six gig (brilliant mix of old and new(er) songs capped with a perfect Jawbreaker cover), Caves, The Dauntless Elite and Peachfuzz. I'm really looking forward to seeing The Brown Hound James Band properly at some point and, from where I was listening, Attack! Vipers! sounded phenomenal. Popping my head around the door for Milloy, when the crowd in the main room was HUGE, made me so glad I decided to give this thing another go and reaffirmed my faith in the "for the love of it" ethic.
The midnight acoustic set by Dave Hause (of The Loved Ones) and Franz Nicolay (and Helen Chambers) and Juvi Hall just cemented all of that.
Extra thanks to to all the staff at The Well for being super nice and utterly relaxed all day - despite the lateness of the bands and the last minute requests.
Now all we have to do is figure out a way of topping it in 2012. :-)

Right, so there are some ace label plans already taking shape behind closed doors but you'll have to wait until after NYNS for me to divulge any juicy information. In the meantime, here's how the line-up for NYNS is looking...
Milloy
The Dauntless Elite
Attack! Vipers!
Eighty Six
Peachfuzz
The Amistad
Caves
Protectors
Homebrew
Zapiain
The Better End
The Brown Hound James BandThe sad news is that Kelly 8 are no longer coming over so that marks the end of the band. Gutted doesn't come close but we'll be keeping an ear out for their new band soon.
The great news is that Eighty Six are playing! The 'Six last took to a stage in 2004 and this is looking like it'll probably be a one off so make sure to catch them here!
For more info on the bands above and for other info on the gig itself... Visit the official New Year/New Start 2011 website.

New Year / New Start '11

After a three year haitus, New Year/New Start will be making a cautious return come January.
Yep, our Dugong-inspired all-dayer will once again aim to start the new year off with some much needed ROCK come January 15th. The line-up will include the "new blood" on the label as well as a few old Leeds scene die-hard's and some friends from further afield. Balancing the line-up is always tricky, especially with 6 active bands on the label, but hopefully we've managed just enough variation to allow each band room to breathe.
The line up is 90% sorted and will be announced in full in good time. In the meantime I'm happy to confirm the following:
THE DAUNTLESS ELITE
Seems redundant mentioning their previous bands now... You know who they are. Releases on Plan-it-X, Snuffy Smile, Yo Yo and Bombed Out. I've heard their next album is coming together nicely.ATTACK! VIPERS!
South Coast celebrity hardcore with twinkly bits, metallic bits, screams and hearts of fucking gold. Releases out on Yo Yo Records, We Heart Records and Rat Patrol. One of the best live bands around right now.PEACHFUZZ
Replacements/Soul Asylum/Buffalo Tom style indie-rock from Wales. New album is a corker... And a concept album. Who knew.PROTECTORS
Ex-members of Dugong, Pylon and Nathaniel Green play upbeat indie-pop in a Superchunk meets Guided By Voices kinda way. Their alter-ego band did that Cappelo song.HOMEBREW
Cider-fueled, shout-along street-punk from North Yorkshire featuring the mouthy one from The Dauntless Elite. Legends in their own lifetime.THE BETTER END
Ex-members of The Leif Ericsson/Grover/shit loads of other bands playing great, old fashioned melodic punk rock.Keep checking back for more news on this. We should also have a lovely poster for the event soon courtesy of all-round gent, Joe Watson of Attack! Vipers! / Vision Incision.
Oh, and if Facebook is your bag then feel free to register your interest at our New Year / New Start event page.

Our annual festival returns in February 2007 and it's sure to be another good one. Maybe our best yet?
Obviously all the current Bombed Out bands will be in attendance: The Leif Ericsson (who's album-launch this years event coincides with), The Mercury League, Kelly 8 and The Dauntless Elite.
As well as that (and some argue this is the more interesting portion of the day) we've lined up The Minor Fall (sadly their last gig), Calcutecs, Attack! Vipers!, Harbour, Fun! Yeah!, A Book Burning Diet, Tatako, The Magnificent and For Old Times Sake.

New Year / New Start 2006

It’s that time of the (new) year again and we’re proud to announce the details for NYNS2006!
Venue, as always, is Joseph’s Well in Leeds. For info and directions please visit www.josephswell.co.uk. Doors should open around 2pm and it’ll be just £6 in (50p per band can’t be bad!).
In no particular order we’ll have….
The City Ghosts
Fantastic folk/indie/rock/punk/pop from Hull. Greg used to be in Freaks Union but has now teamed up with his sister and friends to bring out something more melodic.
MySpaceDartz!
"Skittering pop pitched somewhere between Futureheads and the best of DC's early Eighties go-go/hardcore crossover scene..." Yep, that’ll do.
MyspaceThe Dauntless Elite
These guys should need no introduction and should no longer require the “ex-Joe Ninety, ex-Fig. 4.0” tag that still crops up everywhere. Oops! Oh well, tuneful, political punk-rock that sits somewhere between The Broadways and Against Me! On Plan-It-X Records.
WebsiteFuck With Fire
Favourites of the Harrogate Hardcore scene, Fuck With Fire play hardcore in the vein of those recent Jade Tree bands… Think Trial By Fire.
The Great St. Louis
Anthemic tunes from the Social Distortion / Hot Water Music / Leatherface school of impassioned punk rock.
WebsiteThe Leif Ericsson
A band who feel like they’ve been part of the Bombed Out family for years now despite the fact that we’ve yet to get an album out of them! Hah. Ace as hell, UK sing-along punk rock with a strong Snuff leaning.
WebsiteMansions of Glory
Straight up punk rock that leans heavily towards the rock end of the spectrum. A slight DC nod gets them Hot Snakes comparisons that are entirely justified.
MySpaceThe Mercury League
One of the best live bands around at the moment – The Mercury League play ace-as-hell melodic hardcore in the Rise Against / Trial By Fire mould and they do it fucking well. They’ve a new album out which comes recommended.
WebsiteThe Mercy Suite
More Bombed Out stalwarts who’ll hopefully have their debut full-length, Crestfallen, released in time for this event. Fast, melodic and a little metallic, The Mercy Suite are a force to be reckoned with and 2006 will hopefully be their year.
WebsiteRuin You!
All-star hardcore band featuring Joe (Jets Vs Sharks), Tim (Jets Vs Sharks, You Me And The Atom Bomb), Lloyd (Blocko) and Dan (You, Me And The Atom Bomb). This is their first time in Leeds and it’s gonna be special.
MySpaceThe SWord
Having released one of the best albums of 2005, The SWord are onto a bit of a winner… ex-Dugong and Joe Ninety folk playing straight-up UK punk rock that’s tuneful as hell.
MySpaceWritten From Negative
Fantastically discordant yet melodic dance-rock (with a punk-rock soul) from Sunderland who blew us away at last years NYNS so much we invited them back. They’ve a new EP out on Company With The Golden Arm that deserves your attention!
WebsiteYou, Me And The Atom Bomb
Fast punk rock from the South Coast that comes across like a cross between The Broadways and Propagandhi. Political, tuneful and ace and featuring current Jets Vs Sharks and ex-When All Else Fails members.
WebsiteSee you there!

New Year / New Thanks!

We managed to total just over £860 for the Tsunami Disaster Appeal which has been sent to Concern this week (Concern are just one of the charities working as part of the Disasters Emergency Committee).
We couldn’t have raised so much without ALL the bands playing for very little or no petrol money on the day, and without those people who paid in a little extra on the door. You know who you are and you’re all ace!
We all had a blast and loved every minute of it but we couldn’t have gotten anywhere without some special help from the following: The Dauntless Elite, The SWord and Eighty Six for the use of their gear, Andrew Elite and Steve SWord for the general help on the day and Dave Bunn @ The Well for the cheaper venue hire and Collective AKA for taking some of the pressure off this year.
How good were Dugong too? Encore-as-fuck! Every band blew us away and, in some cases, were the best we'd ever seen them! Great to see Eighy Six back again too - it had been too long!
Here’s to the rest of 2005!!

Edit: In light of the recent tsunami disaster in Southern Asia, all money raised will be donated to Concern - one of the many relief agences currently distributing aid in India, Sri Lanka and Indonesia. Thank you.
Yep, the 5th New Year / New Start is upon us and once again we’re chuffed as fuck about the line-up! Venue as usual is Joseph’s Well in Leeds and while we’ve cut things down to an all-dayer this year again (due to booking problems at the Well) it should make for one great event.
The day will kick off at around 1pm – get there early to catch…
Eagle Eye, a band comprised of ex-Buzzkill and current Eighty Six members. I’ve heard they’re loud, crazy and a little bit rocking with keyboards and shit thrown in and a slight Q And Not U leaning – with this being their first gig though who the hell knows!
Next up will be The SWord (as in The S Word – we think!). Another Bombed Out family group featuring Matt from Dugong and Steve and Rob, both ex-Joe Ninety. Their sound has been described as striped down and bare pop-punk-rock. Again, another first gig!
Chillerton will be back to haunt the Well yet again as our 3rd band. Whether they’ll be a 4 or a 3 piece on the day who knows but what we do know is that their melodic punk with Leatherface styled guitars and Against Me style vocals is always a treat. Their new EP is a bit of a winner.
The Down And Outs will be up next – salt of the earth street punk from Marko and the boys, on Dead and Gone Records. Catchy tunes, songs about the underclass and the odd Oi! Moment. Get in!
The North East’s Written from Negative are fantastic. They sit slap bang in the middle of the sound you’d expect from a band from that region – right between This Ain’t Vegas and Paper Cut Out – and they’re all the better for it. Words like angular, danceable and dynamic should be used here.
Unfortunately Remainderfour are no longer able to play.
Bedford Falls should need no introduction. Melodic, rocking and heartfelt ( :-) ) rock with a very slight country twang from South Wales – on Newest Industry Records. They’ll be followed by…
The Dauntless Elite – a band who really should need no introduction. Ex-Joe Ninety and Fig. 4.0 bods playing some of the best melodic punk you’re likely to hear. I’ll mention The Broadways and Dillinger Four so you’ll get the gist, on Plan-It-X / Somebodys Song Records.
Next up are The Mercy Suite. You probably know who they are by now but if not, 2 ex-Dropnose and an ex-Voorhees playing fast-as-you-like punk rock with a dark, metallic centre. New album out soon on Bombed Out.
Eighty Six will make a welcome return next – we haven’t seen these boys play in donkey’s! The best “Jawbreaker covering Jehu, Bluetip and GVSB” band going, hell yeah! Current Buzzkill, Kill Yourself and That Fucking Tank members.
Now down to the top three and The Leif Ericsson are back, again after a lengthy absence! Brilliant Snuff meets Hot Water Music meets all your favourite punk bands. Ex or current members of everyone (The Propagumbhis, Spy Vs Spy, Nivau, etc)! Debut album due 2005 on Bombed Out.
SCHC veterans (and they’re still so young!) Jets Vs Sharks are our penultimate band. They’ve been touring up and down the country like crazy really and they’re one of the tightest live bands the UK punk scene have seen in a long while. Brilliant melodic hardcore with a bit of metal thrown in. If you’re into Refused, Boy Sets Fire or Hot Water Music then you’ll love these boys!
Finally, Dugong will round out the evening. They’ve been around forever and released two amazing albums, with a new release due in time for their Easter UK tour. Jazzy, soulful and eclectic indie-rock with punk-rock roots fronted by one of the finest singer-songwriters we have in the scene. Wakey boys done good.
Entry is only £6. Hopefully we’ll see you there!

- Jets Vs Sharks - ace HWM/Refused styled hardcore from down south. aces!

No weekend tickets as we can't be fussed with that headache, though we've tried to keep the prices low.
Hopefully we'll see you there!!!!
