NYNS 2012
Welcome to the website of the 2012 New Year/New Start punk rock and indie all-day festival in Leeds (an "all-dayer" for you older peeps).
Once again the venue will be The Well (formerly Joseph's Well) in Leeds where, at lunch time on the 28th January, The Facts will kick off what will be almost 10 hours of quality tuneage.
Leeds own The Dauntless Elite, who are celebrating the release of their fantastic second album, will headline, ably supported by the cream of the crop of the current UK DIY punk scene. From the indie-rock of Bedford Falls to the Sonic Youth-inspired noise of Saturday's Kids; from the street-punk anthems of Homebrew to the rock and roll swagger of Matadors, from the DC styled pop of Coal Train to the alt-country twang of Brown Hound James - the full breadth of the UK scene is covered. It's sure to be one hell of a day!
Oh, and if you want to make more of a weekend of things don't forget the NEW YEAR PRE-START gig at the Fox & Newt on the Friday Night!
See you there!

Their 6th time out at a NYNS and they finally get to headline! Some would say it's about bloody time.
Descriptions seem futile as I'm fairly sure that if you're here looking at this website (and you're contemplating this gig) then you already know who they are but if not, The Elite play punk rock . There. Wiser? Good.
The above songs are both taken from their latest, and recently released second album, More Bloody Bad News, which follows on from 2007's Graft and a slew of 7"s on (and a 10") on labels such as Yo Yo, Plan-it-X and Snuffy Smile.

If there was a band playing this year who'd we'd class as "special guests" it would be Above Them.
Weirdly enough we got sent an early demo by these lads "back in the day" and since then we've watched (and heard) them go from strength to strength to become one of the best melodic punk bands in the UK. Fans of Hot Water Music and all of those Fest style bands should embrace Above Them right now.
The band already have an album and a couple of EPs out on Inhaler Records and a new album is promised soon. This appearence will also be the first time they'll be taking to the stage as a 4-peice and if you know how bracing they were capable of being as a 3-peice I'd be preparing to be blown away come January.

Lets get the "ex-members" thing out of the way first... This Ain't Vegas were fantastic. Live and on record they created some of the most thoughtful, dynamic and, lets face it, accessible left-field rock that the UK has ever produced.
Coal Train feature 3 TAV alumni in their ranks and while the nods to their previous band are there for all to hear, they've also upped the song-writing and downright poppyness of what came before. Think less DC and more the indie/alternative rock of Wilco or The Red House Painters. The added keys simply cement the feeling of progression and help ensure that Coal Train sound utterly unique in the process.
After a few singles on Run Of The Mill Records the band are promising a full LP soon and we're sure it's going to be nothing short of spectacular.

Back again aften being one of the many stand-out bands from last year's NYNS, Caves play pop-punk for people that remember how good pop-punk can be and who like their songs over in less than 3 minutes.; Indie rock for people who have Superchunk records in their collections; Boy/girl vocals for people who go weak at the knees over bands like Lemuria or Good Luck; "whooooooaaaaaaaoooooohhhh"'s a plenty for, well, come on, who doesn't appreciate a good "whooooooaaaaaaaoooooohhhh".
The band released both their debut album, Homeward Bound, and a collection CD featuring their 7" and split tracks in 2011, both on the rather good Specialist Subject Records. They even named a song "New Year/New Start"... Which is nice.

It's ace when a band you've liked for ages turn into a band you love. So it's been the case with Cardiff-based Bedford Falls.
The phrase "at the top of their game" is often overused but at the moment it's fits the Falls perfectly. Their performance at Out of Spite over the summer was faultless and proves just how important a stable and, above all else, happy band (well, as happy as Tom gets, bless him) is.
For those unfamiliar with the band they play heartfelt indie-rock in the vein of Buffalo Tom or The Lemonheads, all 90s and stuff. As their last album is a few years old now (Savings And Loan was released by Boss Tuneage back in 2008) I'm fairly certain it's about time we had another one.

Lets face it, Homebrew are legendary. They've been together in some form or another for more than a decade and they aren't showing any signs of letting up. In fact, expect a few songs from their brand new album, Last Orders, which is hot fresh off the press this winter.
Dave, John and Lee (the mouthy one from The Dauntless Elite) have been friends of the label since well before there even was a label! Admittedly they're used to playing gigs alongside "real" punk bands (last seen supporting UK Subs) - you know, jobless types with mohawk - but hopefully they'll get a great reception here as well.
So, raise your pint glass (cider preferred) and get ready to enjoy some of the finest drunken street-punk this side of, well, almost anyone on this side of the Atlantic.

Formed from the ashes of Four Dumb Kids many moons ago, The Amistad have gone from strength to strength on a journey which produced two stunning split 7"s (with Above Them and Canada's Orphan Choir) and culminated in 2010's brilliant Kept Under By A Generation Of Ghosts album.
Coming from Leamington Spa via Sheffield, the band play Jawbreaker/Broadways-esque, mid-paced punk rock with more than enough intricacies to keep it interesting. Couple this with some of the best lyrics to come from a UK band for years and a knack for playing their hearts out live and we know you'll be impressed.
A split 7" with New Bruises was their most recent offering and we're hoping album #2 follows in 2012.

Not another bloody band from Wales? Ha ha.
Taking their musical cues from the likes of Fugazi, And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of The Dead, Mission Of Burma and Sonic Youth, Saturday’s Kids are nothing if not currently unique in our fair land. They specialise in tense, interwoven guitar sound scapes that build until the post-rock ends and all you’re left with is pure, unfettered hardcore punk, all the while little flourishes of melodic guitar add texture as Sion and Rhys alternate between screams, shouts, whispers and, yes, “proper” singing.
With vinyl releases now stacking up on labels such as Art For Blind, sncl and Bombed Out, and fresh from supporting The Future Of The Left at a couple of gigs and a tour with Facel Vega, 2011 was one hell of a year for these lads. We're hoping that their NYNS debut is a special one.

Zapiain have been playing gigs in and around Leeds for a good while now (and have even ventured as far as, well, Wales), self-released a couple of great little EPs and released their debut album on Bombed Out just in time for the last NYNS.
Since then they've been back to the studio to record a couple of newer songs, one of which, "Step Back", you can hear above. Now here's hoping that they're already thinking about a follow up album!

Matadors specialise in garagey punk rock for fans of Hot Snakes, The Night Marchers, Obits etc. The fact that they recently supported Hot Snakes and John Reis didn't immediately file an injuction against them proves just how unstoppable they are!
Don't take our word for it though - their album is currently streaming on their website below and a couple of tracks from said opus can be experienced above.

Slow Science are simply fantastic. The band hit the ground running early 2011 with an awesome five track ep which they took straight to the road.
Amazing and catchy indie-punk-rock is the order of the day here with Jon and Stacey both sharing vocal duties. They're voices compliment each other so well that if I'd never seen them live, I'd have probably assumed were all the same singer. Not that Jon sings like a girl or anything. Err... Anyway... The Slow Science demo has been played more than any other demo I think I've ever owned and, having seen them live already this year I promise that you're in for a treat.
Oh, and catch them while you can... As you never know when they'll be around next!

Back once again after a great gig last year, Brown Hound James will once again be present to entertain and provide a nice contrast to the more straight-up punk bands that are playing.
If "Brown Hound James" sounds familiar it may be because singer Matt Broadbent, after the demise of Dugong and as Nathaniel Green were coming to an end, used that moniker for a handful of solo acoustic gigs. He even recorded a demo, showcasing a new brand of stripped down roots-rock which marked a departure from his previous work.
Fast forward a few years and Matt is back and has recorded a new record with a full band. The results are spectacular - for fans of The Mountain Goats, Son Volt and maybe a spot of The Weakerthans. Oh, and Dugong, obviously.
Although Matt was due to play with a full band as well this time around we're afraid that it will just be Matt. Who knows though... He might surprise us with a couple of songs from his prolific history to make up for it.
As well as making the best coffee in Leeds, The Facts play honest mod/indie/new wave punk in the vein of Buzzcocks, The Jam, Stiff Little Fingers et al. They started gigging early 2011 (and almost played last year's NYNS), but had an enforced hiatus due to a broken finger!
The band feature current & ex members of Thirty Seconds Until Armageddon, The Dead Reckoning, The VS Project, The Dauntless Elite, The Last Chance, Achtung Everybody! - how's that for a CV!?
Alas, they've yet to commit song to tape (they're hoping to get some tracks recorded early 2012) so you'll just have to take our word for it: they're worth getting down early for!
These are The Facts.

UPDATE: Peachfuzz have unfortunately had to cancel. Hopefully we'll see them back in Leeds soon though!
There's something about South Wales... The region just seems to spawn fantastic band after fantastic band and Peachfuzz are no exception, coming across as the region's answer to The Replacements or Big Star.
The band unashamedly bridge the gap between late 80's/early 90's US-style college-rock and UK indie-rock. fans of The Gaslight Anthem, The Hold Steady or even the country-tinged rock and roll of Social Distortion will find something to savour here.
The bands' second album Everything Takes Forever was one of the highlight albums of 2010 and the follow-up is being recorded right now - the track "Down To Me" above is just a brief teaser.
